Licence, security and responsible gambling

The most unfortunate thing about CasinoLab is that they operate without a valid gambling licence. What they hold is a Costa Rica licence, a corporate licence that allows them to run a business offering online gambling. They aren’t regulated or monitored by a gambling authority. That makes it impossible to say with any certainty that they follow industry standards for security and player rights.

What we do know is that their data security is good, and they use TLS encryption to protect the casino. They also work with licensed game developers, which means the games on offer are fair. Beyond that, they state in their terms and conditions that they keep player funds in bank accounts separate from their own operating funds.

CasinoLab has a dedicated page explaining what responsible gambling is and which warning signs to watch out for. The page provides a decent amount of information on the subject, and they’ve also listed links to organisations that help people struggling with gambling addiction.

Beyond information, though, CasinoLab unfortunately offers very limited tools to help you keep your play in check. The only option available is closing your account, and that requires contacting customer support. Limits for deposits, wagering, losses and session length aren’t available.

User experience and mobile play

Even inexperienced players will find the CasinoLab site intuitive, as it’s easy to navigate your way to games, bonuses and other services. The menu is tidy, and all the text on the site is properly localised. They’ve also made things convenient with local currency support. No extra software is needed to play, since all games load directly in your browser. 

Playing from mobile is just as good an experience, as the site automatically adjusts to fit your screen size. Menus and buttons are repositioned to keep everything as user-friendly as possible. Customer support at CasinoLab

Customer support is available around the clock, 365 days a year. You’ll get almost immediate help via live chat, but if you have time to wait a while you can also contact them by email. When we tested that route, it took between 1 and 4 hours to get a reply. In total we contacted customer support five times during our testing period.

The questions we asked covered bonus terms, withdrawal limits, responsible gambling and theoretical return to player across different games. We found the agents friendly and patient, and we got the impression they were doing their best to answer our questions. Most of the replies we received were written directly to us, though on occasion they pointed us to the site’s help centre or sent pre-written canned responses. 

How we tested CasinoLab

We tested CasinoLab using Kingbonus’s standard methodology for online casinos. This methodology ensures an objective casino test that covers every aspect that matters to players. Here’s some of what we looked into and did:

• Terms and registration: We read the site’s terms and conditions in full, looking for any conditions that deviate from the industry standard, for better or worse. We then registered a gaming account that we used for the rest of our testing. 
• Welcome bonus: We used the entire four-part welcome bonus, depositing €50 each time. We also looked into the other promotions on offer and read every last bonus term.
• Deposits, withdrawals and KYC: We made six deposits at CasinoLab using several payment methods, alternating between Revolut, MiFinity and Ethereum. We also made two withdrawals, to our Revolut bank account and our Ethereum wallet respectively. The gaming account was verified as well.
• Games and casino lobby: The casino games were assessed on variety, volume and quality. We went through all the different categories as well as the providers. The live casino and sportsbook were reviewed just as thoroughly.
• Customer support: We contacted an agent five times, each time asking carefully chosen questions to test their knowledge, friendliness, response time and our overall experience. We focused on questions that matter to everyday players.
• Responsible gambling tools: We couldn’t self-exclude, as we needed to keep the gaming account open for further testing. Since no other tools are available, we weren’t able to test their responsible gambling processes beyond asking customer support for information.

Our verdict and rating for CasinoLab 

After thoroughly testing CasinoLab, we found both positives and negatives. Where they score best is on game selection and the bonus programme. The game catalogue is exceptionally large and varied, and we know players will appreciate the many ongoing offers, not least the bonus shop. We were also happy with customer support, and we like that there are so many payment methods available.

The biggest negative comes down to security, as it’s disappointing, and potentially risky, that the casino isn’t properly licensed. The fact that they don’t offer more responsible gambling tools adds to the concern on that front. On top of that, it’s poor that the withdrawal limits are so low and that processing takes as long as it does.
